Flash talks (new this year)
- Industry partners sponsor course development and research in the CMU database group this semester (
0:46,16:45). - Format: a 10-minute talk at the end of class every Wednesday, starting around week two, given by a representative, engineer, or founder of a database company (
16:45). - Content: what their system does, why it's interesting, and which problems it solves (
17:16). - Purpose: let companies — not just the professor — show how the semester's material maps onto real production problems, reinforcing the lecture topics (
17:16). - These are explicitly not recruiting talks; in-class sessions stay on systems and ideas (
17:46).
Recruiting event
- Separate on-campus event on September 16–17, open to everyone in the class; details to be posted on Piazza a week or two out (
17:46). - Companies come to campus for internships and full-time roles (
17:46). - Instead of the generic "submit your resume to the website" pile, companies were asked to set up dedicated channels, email addresses, and portals for CMU DB students, so applications reach hiring managers on the database projects directly (
17:46,18:31).
