  • Everyone should already be invited to Piazza; an invite code can be sent if not (5:30).

Non-CMU students

  • A separate non-CMU Gradescope site is offered: sign up for an account, use the login code, and set the university to "Carnegie Mellon University" or it won't work (6:14, 6:32).
  • The terms of that access (6:32, 7:00):
    • Do not post solutions on GitHub.
    • Do not email the instructors or TAs for help.
    • Use the unofficial community Discord (maintained by someone outside CMU) instead — CMU students and TAs should stay on Piazza.
    • Projects open for grading to non-CMU students only after the CMU deadline.

Textbook

  • Database System Concepts (Silberschatz, Korth, Sudarshan) — likely PDF-only now, no physical copy at the bookstore (7:56).
  • Assigned readings per lecture; topics not covered by the book get supplemental readings/notes (7:56).
  • His view: the best database systems textbook available, and the only one still actively maintained (7:56).
